For mushroom petri dishes, the goal of the media is to provide a sterile, nutrient-rich environment for mycelial growth and observation.

The choice of media can be optimized for specific mushroom species, as different fungi may have preferences for nutrient ratios. Below are the currently available media options, MEA and PDA are generally excellent starting points for most mushroom cultivation on Agar or Gellan Gum.

60mm and 90mm Plastic Petri Dishes

Peptone and other nutrients can be added to any order for an additional charge.

Malt Extract Agar (MEA):

  • Composition: Primarily consists of malt extract (providing sugars and carbohydrates), Agar or Gellan Gum (for solidification), and water.
  • Purpose: It's a widely used general-purpose medium, particularly effective for spore germination and promoting vigorous mycelial growth for a wide range of mushroom species. It's often considered a good all-around choice.

Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA):

  • Composition: Made from potato infusion (providing starches and other nutrients), dextrose (a simple sugar source), and agar.

  • Purpose: Another very common and versatile medium in mycology. It supports the growth of a broad spectrum of fungi and is excellent for general mycelial culture, spore germination, and maintaining mother cultures. Its slightly acidic pH can also help to deter some bacterial contamination.

Malt Yeast Agar (MYA): Similar to MEA but includes yeast extract, which provides additional vitamins and nutrients, making it suitable for more demanding species.

Water Agar (WA): A very simple, nutrient-poor medium consisting mainly of agar and water. It's used for strain purification from contaminated tissues (as only the fungi that can survive on minimal nutrients will grow) or for specific morphological observations.
